Our Story

One evening in 2003, Dr. Rebecca Portnoy walked past a sushi restaurant and noticed that the staff was eating together before closing down for the evening.

This meal, a workplace ritual called Makanai, inspired Dr. Portnoy to begin a 15-year investigation into the role of rituals in workplace culture. When, years later, she was selecting a name for her consulting firm, the name Makanai was the perfect fit.

Now, Makanai Consulting helps organizations create their own rituals that inspire shifts in relationships, purpose, and culture.

Our Approach

We use a collaborative process that will lead to a better decision making feedback loop for intentional improvement in relationships, purpose, and culture.
